AIR IN THE AREA OF TOGLIATTIAZOT OPERATIONS CONFORMS TO ALL STANDARDS

Togliatti Mayor’s Office initiated a reconnaissance survey of atmospheric air quality in remote residential areas of the district not covered by the routine observation system and located in a zone potentially affected by JSC Togliattiazot operations. The air analysis showed that the amount of atmospheric pollutants in the settlement of Povolzhsky and the village of Novomatyushkino is much lower than the standard maximum permissible concentration (MPC).

The analysis of atmospheric air was conducted on October 13, 2016 by the Togliatti Special Hydrometeorological Observatory (TSHO). The representatives of the Directorate for Nature Management and Environmental Protection of the Togliatti Municipal Service Department also participated in the inspection. The survey was conducted in the daytime, during working hours, with the wind blowing from the direction of ToAZ.

TSHO specialists drew control air samples for analysis for nitrogen oxide (both monoxide and dioxide), sulphur dioxide, carbon monoxide, ammonia, hydrogen sulphide and formaldehyde. The analysis showed that the amount of these substances contained in the air conforms to all sanitary standards. The results of the reconnaissance survey will be added to the general database for the urban district of Togliatti.

Inspections of the atmosphere were also conducted at eight air pollution observation stations in the urban district of Togliatti. The expert evaluation revealed that the atmospheric pollution level does not exceed MPC standards: it is assessed as low.

As one of the largest chemical manufacturers in Russia, Togliattiazot gives priority to the environmental protection: in 2015, investments in this area increased to RUB 460 million (5% higher than a year before). Due to the implemented measures, in 2015 ToAZ managed to reduce emissions to 6,742.6 t, which is 26% lower than the permissible level. Last year, ToAZ won the “ECOTOGLIATTI” contest of environmental initiatives among industrial enterprises (the “Clean City” category). The project “Days of Protection against Environmental Hazards in the Territory of the City” implemented by ToAZ earned a special honorable mention by the Togliatti Mayor Sergei Andreyev.
