TOGLIATTIAZOT COMPLETED OVERHAUL OF AMMONIA PRODUCTION UNIT No 3

Togliattiazot PJSC, Russia’s major ammonia producer, completed overhaul of ammonia production unit No.3. This appeared to be one of the most ambitious projects in the plant history for its scope of work and amount of investments.

The Unit was fitted with upgraded turbine, compressor and dynamic equipment, and a new control system. The technical upgrade enabled lining-up of equipment operation and almost 10% reduction of natural gas flow rate per 1 tonne of product, which is expected to bring to serious economic and ecological efficiency. Besides, enhancement of ammonia compressor K-901 lead to increase in production safety.

“A new Siemens air compressor steam turbine was installed on the Unit; it is efficient as consuming less steam, technically ingenious and has power margin. Air compressor enclosures were upgraded. To conduct technical upgrade of HP and LP turbines of the synthesis gas compressor, both turbines were dismantled and sent to Finland for repair,” - explained Victor Kazachkov, Deputy CEO for technical policies of CJSC Corporation Togliattiazot.

The turbines’ upgrade was performed by Telatek, partner of General Electric - the project’s general contractor.

In addition, the unit was switched over to automated digital control system made by Honeywell, allowing to minimize the human impact, increase reliability and equipment operational safety, and maintain sufficient process mode.

As of now, ammonia production unit No.3 of Togliattiazot PJSC has reached its design capacity.
