TOGLIATTIAZOT UPGRADES ITS PRODUCTION TO REDUCE THE ENVIRONMENTAL BURDEN
The Earth day is celebrated on June 5 of each year. The press centre of the broadcasting agency of the Samara Region held a roundtable discussion on the occasion, where experts discussed the environmental situation in the region and reported on the performance results over the past year. Representatives of TOAZ PJSC held reports on their performance as well.
Viktor Kazachkov, Director for Technical Policy, (in the picture) underlined that TogliattiAzot was the greatest chemical plant of the Samara Region and one of the greatest plants in Russia. It pays particular attention to the environmental safety. Since any chemical plant has a negative impact on the environment, its main goal should be minimization thereof.
TOAZ has in-house treatment facilities. They treat municipal wastewater of the plant, the Komsomolsky district of Togliatti and the northern industrial city hub. Modernization of these treatment facilities (replacement of obsolete equipment) has been in progress over the past few years. This resulted in a reduction in the wastewater discharge by 25%. The main goal of the company is to switch to the closed-cycle production.
Over 7 years, the plant invested a total of RUB 47 bln. into equipment retrofitting and development of its facilities. It does it both to enhance the production efficiency and to reduce the emissions. For instance, TogliatiAzot underwent modernization to reduce natural gas consumption by 10% (appr. 450 mln. cub.m), which also has an impact on the amount of emissions.
COx is the main hazardous waste from a chemical production. COx alone is not dangerous. However, a large amount thereof collected in the atmosphere causes a greenhouse effect constituting the main threat to the current environmental situation. Therefore, reducing the amount of COx emissions is the priority goal of the environmental policy of TOAZ. It promised to address the issue fundamentally by building the third urea plant that will use the entire amount of COx and generate zero emissions into the air.
It spent RUB 250 M on environmental activities in 2019. For instance, those investments allowed it increasing the share of recycled production waste up to 75%. Furthermore, plant workers every year participate in various environmental activities. For instance, they plant young trees - the planting area has reached 40 ha over five years. This year’s planting campaign was carried over to the fall due to the anti-epidemic precautions.
Elimination of unauthorized landfills is another important mission of the plant. TOAZ provides its vehicles and specialists for this purpose. They removed 600 tones of garbage over the past three years.
Russian nitrogen fertilizer major Togliattiazot on Monday revealed the centrepiece of its new urea plant - a 107 metre tall granulation tower - had been installed and the project is 38% complete. Due for commissioning in 2021, the 2,200 tonne/day unit will reinforce the company's presence as the largest supplier of urea to the domestic market.
TogliattiAzot receives 150 new hopper cars ordered from United Wagon Company for transportation of mineral fertilizers. The press service of the chemical enterprise announced the news.
