More Than RUB 254 million Allocates TOAZ for Environmental Protection

PJSC TOAZ (Togliattiazot), the largest supplier of urea to the Russian market and a key Russian ammonia producer, spent more than RUB 254 million on environmental protection activities and projects in 2019. The main results of the past year in this area included a significant reduction in wastewater discharges and increased waste processing.

Togliattiazot depends on the availability of water resources. That is why the improvement of the environmental condition of the Volga River is one of the most important aspects of the Company's environmental protection activities. In this regard, biological treatment plants of PJSC TOAZ play the crucial role as they not only process the Company’s wastewater but also service the facilities of the Northern Industrial Hub and residential users in Komsomolsky District of Togliatti. The ongoing upgrading of wastewater treatment plants has allowed TOAZ to reduce wastewater discharges by almost 1.5 times over the past five years, from 20.8 million m3 in 2015 to 13.5 million m3 in 2019.

To reduce water consumption, Togliattiazot uses water recycling systems for ammonia units, where water is treated with reagents to restore it for further use. The plant also has water recycling systems, where water is used repeatedly without special treatment. The operation of these process systems allows to significantly reduce the water consumption from natural sources.

In addition to taking care of water quality, the Company is actively implementing a programme to reproduce biological resources of the Volga River. In 2019, fry (6,000 pcs.) of useful fish was planted in the water area of the Saratov Reservoir. As part of systematic activities, the Company has planted as much as 273,000 fry of common carp and sterlet since 2008.

The environmental activities of PJSC TOAZ are aimed at improving the reliability of equipment through the upgrading programme, improving the environmental monitoring and control of the atmospheric air, water and soil and reducing the environmental impacts.

For example, last year TOAZ significantly increased its share of waste processing. At the end of 2019, it reached 75%, an increase of almost 4 times compared to 2015 (19.2% of waste was recycled).

In addition, PJSC TOAZ initiates and supports numerous environmental campaigns, including:

  • Restoration of the forest park zone in Togliatti severely damaged by large-scale fires of 2010. In 2019, the Company participated in planting of seedlings on 10 hectares, and TOAZ restored a total of 40 hectares of forest since 2014;
  • Campaigns to clean up the area and remove unauthorized landfills. Last year, 116.6 tons of garbage were removed from the city thanks to the Company, and about 600 tons from 2016 to 2019;
  • Waste paper and battery collection.

"TOAZ cares about Togliatti's environment. We are upgrading production facilities and wastewater treatment plants, thereby providing leadership not only in production, but also in reducing environmental impacts. We actively participate in campaigns aimed at preserving nature; we plant forests and remove landfills. Togliattiazot is responsible for the environment, because our future and our children's future directly depends on environmenta' conditions," notes Dmitry Mezheedov, General Director, CJSC Corporation Togliattiazot.
